Gold
What is placer gold?
Placer means a substance that can be recovered from gravel. Unlike hardrock gold mining, where gold is attached to the rock and needs to be removed using chemicals, placer gold is free gold mixed in the gravel. Placer gold ranges in size from dust to ounce- sized nuggets.
How is placer gold formed?
The erosion of mineralized bedrock forms placer gold. As the bedrock is eroded, gold and other heavy minerals and some gemstones are released. These can then become concentrated through stream activity forming pay steaks in the beds by accumulation.
How is placer gold mined?
Firstly black muck must be removed to expose underlying gravels. Secondly the gold- bearing gravel is washed and screened to specific size. The oversize is rejected as waste, while the undersize passes into a sluice box. With running water and the gravity assistance the gold settles in the sluice box. Finally, the concentrate left in the sluice box is further processed using a small sluice to separate the gold.
Is placer gold pure?
Placer gold is natural, raw gold. Purity of gold is often represented in terms of fineness, with 1000 fine being 100% pure gold, or 24 karat.
Gold nuggets:
The larger the nugget, the more rare and more valuable it is. Gold is found in many forms such as dust- sized particles, flakes, wire, nuggets, and in crystalline form in rare circumstances.
